You cannot take bottles of water or cans of drink into the Stadio Olimpico, but once you're in vendors sell refreshments and assorted snacks in the aisles while ground level and stairwell kiosks serve up beer @ €4 per bottle, cans of soft drink for €3, hot dogs, pizzettas and sandwiches @ €4 a piece, assorted crisps, tuc and ritz biscuits @ €3 per box, ice cream @ €3, espresso for €1 and water for €1,50. Shots of Borghetti (coffee liqueur) are sold outside the ground. Roma match programmes when available, if ever, cost €1 or are free. The de facto Lazio programme for most Serie A and TIM Cup matches is Voce della Nord, published by the Irriducibili and sold outside the Stadio Olimpico for €2 or less if you buy a few. We have never seen a Lazio programme for sale on a European night. Cittaceleste is the free newspaper which most fans use to sit on after a quick read. The Stadio Olimpico now has new toilets, built for the UEFA Champions League Final 2009. Italians make alot of noise which intensifies when they watch football, the overwhelming din generates real atmosphere / updated: September 2009 |

Football in Rome is as passionate as it is political. The blue half of the city was traditionally 'right wing' but these days you will find as much right as left in either Curva of either team. Italy is a police state and there are as many millions of communists as there are fascists who live well here, which has nothing to do with football. Some supporters of Roma and Lazio consider it hip to be hooligan. English lads have been targeted on European nights by groups of Roma Ultras who stab fans of the clubs whose hooligan element they aspire to emulate. The 'English disease' per se, however, is beyond all of them. Rome's Ultras, while not the most volatile on the peninsula, co-ordinate colourful and creative support in their respective Curvas. The anglicisation of what they get up to on the terraces makes every game in Rome worth seeing - something always kicks off / updated: August 2009 |

If you carry a bag into the Stadio Olimpico, a Carabiniere will ask you to open it for inspection. All types of photographic equipment are permitted. To reach the Stadio, take Metro Linea A (Battistini-Anagnina) to Ottaviano/S. Pietro station and then board the number 32 bus that passes close by. Alternatively you can take the one and only tram from Piazza Flaminio (Stazione Flaminio on Metro Linea A) to Piazza Antonio Mancini, then walk across the river (Ponte Duca D'Aosta) to the Stadio Olimpico. If you are staying in town, take the 910 bus from Piazza dei Cinquecento (in front of Termini station) to Piazza Antonio Mancini as above. You will be asked to show your passport at the perimeter gates by stewards. Turnstiles have been installed behind every main gate further in. You must scan your ticket to pass through. If you look even remotely English, the probability of being frisked by security is approximately 100%. After the series of checks you will be allowed to make your way to your seat / updated: August 2009 |

ROMA finished in sixth place after a woeful domestic campaign but were unfortunate to lose out on penalties at home to Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League Last 16. The Giallorossi put themselves under huge pressure in Europe from the off after a nightmare start, capitulating to CFR 1907 Cluj midfielder Draculio on September 16th, Matchday 1. The South American Romanians have never looked back, winning the Cupa României again and riding high in their domestic league. 3-1 in Rome v Chelsea the only highlight of the competition and entire season for Spalletti, a struggle compounded by the signing in June of donkey defender Simone Loria, hit and miss strikers Menez and Baptista, indifferent form and justifiably furious supporters who boycotted their Curva on more than one occasion. Roma were booted out of the TIM Cup by the team they defeated in two previous finals, and just when Romanisti thought that things couldn't deteriorate any further, they did. LAZIO went on to win the trophy. Franco Sensi died on August 17th. and his daughter, AS Roma General Manager (President) Rosella has been bullied into selling ever since to reduce the massive Italpetrol debt, at least in part. Matteo Brighi was a rock for Roma, Panucci scored some crucial face-saving goals before falling out with everyone and eventually leaving for Parma. Both Vucinic and Mexes were courted by Premiership giants but stay in the capital. The only worthwhile acquisition was young Udinese defender Marco Motta (23) in February. Roma have sold the silky midfield skills of local boy Alberto Aquilani to Liverpool to ease their considerable financial troubles. He is unlikely to be the only sacrificial lamb, more will follow. Spalletti is already guiding his team through the UEFA Europa League minefield; KAA Gent were thrashed 10-2 on aggregate in the 3rd. Qualifying Round, now MFK Košice of Slovakia stand between Roma and the Group stage proper. |

The annual 'Pandev ready to sign for Bayern Munich' column was inked and ready to print within hours of season's end. So little to say of another Lazio campaign? Perhaps, but significant transfer activity was afoot nonetheless. The co-ownership deal struck with Al-Sadd for Mauro Zárate was shrewd business by Lotito, who knew just how good the burgeoning Argentine striker was certain to become. Lazio's 'difficult' President further secured the services of Brazilian midfielder Matuzalém, Swiss right back Stephan Lichtsteiner and defensive midfielder Cristian Brocchi from Milan. The return of Pasquale Foggia from Cagliari was popular and capped a reasonably satisfying dabble in the transfer market. Valon Behrami to Zola's West Ham United the only departee of real note. Marco Ballotta switched to Modena to occupy the vacant position of General Manager (he resigned after 35 days), and Igli Tare swapped his shirt for a suit and what is now known as the post of 'Technical Area Director'. Make what you will of that job description, as we're sure it was managerial under Delio Rossi. Lazio finished up in tenth place after leading Serie A in September, spurred on by Zárate's goals and real conviction. Patchy home performances, particularly after the Winter Break, and heavy defeats at home to Cagliari (1-4) then Chievo (0-3), were papered over by a spirited 4-2 derby win on April 11th. and TIM Cup glory in May. Victories at Milan and Juventus paved the way to winning the Final 6-5 (1-1) on penalties against Walter Mazzari's Sampdoria in Rome, his penultimate game in charge. A UEFA Europa League place just about enough to salvage a real hit and miss domestic campaign. |

The Gabriele Sandri case concluded in the most predictable manner imaginable. Spaccarotella was let off lightly with a deeply disturbing six year jail sentence. Lazio stronghold Piazza Vescovio, a middle-class suburb due north of the city centre which had been the nerve centre for Sandri's many friends, family and supporters ever since his killing in November 2007, exploded into violence when news of the derisory sentence was made public. Spaccarotella was never going to be found guilty of murder, Italy is controlled by numerous corruptible police forces and those who wear one of the many uniforms in vogue can do what is their wont to whoever they choose. Sandri was taken out by the system he grew up in. The more images of Gabbo in the Curva Nord the better, the more graffiti in the city bearing his name the better, so no one will ever forget the fact that Italy is fully supportive of state-sanctioned violence, murder and corruption. Luigi Spaccarotella's six years for murder will be reduced to two or three for good behaviour, but he'll need police protection for the rest of his life wherever he hides out. Spaccarotella has described himself as 'a cretin, not a Rambo'. How about cold-blooded killer? |

Livorno, Parma and Bari were promoted. Bari have not seen Serie A action since 2001 and we welcome them back to competition against Roma and Lazio in the top tier. |

From showing signs of improvement, Lazio returned to their self-styled mire with brass knobs on. Cagliari are in very decent shape these days, Jeda, Conti and Matri get the goals and their defence, led by Michele Canini, has toughened up. It is worth remembering that Canini was Lazio's top transfer target back in August, until Lotito and Tare botched the agreement. Canini played out of his skin, rubbed salt into the wound etc. Despite violent protests at Formello in the days leading up to this match, Lazio were beyond dire. A large number of irate Laziali in the Tribuna Tevere moved down to pitch level to taunt Lotito in turn with Curva Nord boo boys. By taking umbrage at what has now been proven to be his own failure to offload Pandev and Ledesma for obscene amounts of money, and then have the arrogance to prevent them from playing, is why everyone connected with his club has become so fractious. Muslera's horribly familiar slip, so reminiscent of Lazio 1 Milan 5 two years ago when our Live Match Report flaunted a vocabulary as voracious as never before, defined this latest reverse. As luck would have it, Milan come here next for Giornata 12. On the upside, Lazio were thrashed 4-1 by Cagliari in the corresponding fixture last season, so to lose by just one goal is perhaps cause for celebration. This was a defeat of the unacceptable kind. Bari (A), Villareal (A) and Milan will spell the end of the line for Ballardini and never has a sacking been so deserved. Foggia and Zárate are on record as having told (please come back) Delio Rossi's replacement where to put his tactics, and rumours abound that the dressing room is steadfast in their refusal to comply with his management style. Riccardo Perpetuini made his full debut but was replaced by Stefano Mauri at the break, before which Maurito created a few chances (for himself), had his shirt stretched by Agostini for a meek penalty appeal and Kolarov's early bird charge brought a great save out of Marchetti. Conti's free kick from 25 metres slipped through Muslera and crept over the line via Matri's studs on 40 minutes. Nando redeemed himself by tipping a dipping Davide Biondini blockbuster over the bar and Lazzari cracked a late low drive against the post. Marcello Lippi was in the stands to watch Biondini at work. Those who stayed on after the final whistle witnessed a disturbing display of hatred directed towards Lotito and Ballardini. Serie B football here in ten months time is very possible. Vincenzo Paparelli RIP.

Lazio have had the beating of Samp at home at least in the last couple of years, but they've not had to compete against a side as efficient as Del Neri's Blucerchiati. Bang on form and with revenge firmly in mind after their TIM Cup Final defeat to Lazio here back in May, this was a tough call for Ballardini with his team in a trough of their own making. One point in their last two home games reason enough to alienate their hardline supporters. Pazzo Pazzini's broken nose and Diakité's violent shove, both somehow undeserving of clear penalty kicks, the deciding factors in a very open and attacking contest replete with verve, incident, and wayward refereeing. The open and shut case of Siviglia was ball to hand, in no way a third penalty decision gone AWOL. Cassano's churlish theatrics brought the match to a standstill on more than one occasion, and Doria wilfully engaged in wanton timewasting whenever Lazio were in the ascendancy. Baronio was dismissed for a clean tackle and such is his impeccable sportsmanship, he jogged off without a glance nor word to rapturous applause from all quarters, then briefly aired his views on Cassano to Del Neri in the technical area. Brocchi's comeback was impressive and however well Stefano Mauri performs, the Irriducibili will never acknowledge his endeavour. Maurito was at his most selfish best, a constant danger even though he seems oblivious to Rocchi's clever darts and runs in his name. Muslera was forced into a string of saves before Pazzini was left criminally unmarked to despatch a downward header into the corner from Padalino's dink. Matuzalém's reply was almost instant, he rolled Rocchi's loft across Castellazzi and into the net at the second time of asking. After the break Padalino was ordered off, Matuzalém and Rocchi were wasteful, Cassano skimmed the bar late on and later still, Cruz missed out on glory.

Not so much points on the board as a performance to get excited about required to calm a sea of unrest on the blue and white terraces of Rome. Good work however by the team fielded by former Palermo coach Ballardini went some way towards erasing a dismal fortnight. Simone Del Nero was played at left back to cover for the suspended Kolarov and Radu partnered Cribari in central defence. Cribari has dug himself out of a very deep trench since his Europa League blunder, and is more or less back to his workmanlike self. Tommaso Rocchi came on for Cruz to pull his charges together for the last half hour and he led from the front. Sirigu's goal was under bombardment before and after Zárate's six yard poach, even though Cavani fired through Muslera to put the visitors a goal up ten minutes earlier to really put the skids under Lazio. Rocchi's introduction, however, was decisive. First half chances invariably fell to Foggia who had Sirigu in his sights early doors, Baronio was tackling hard and tracking his runs with unerring unaccuracy only for Pasqualino to come up against some very agile keeping. Sirigu palmed away Zárate's curler before the break after the striker had taken out three defenders. Dabo put the Argentine hitman clean through only for his predictable shot to skew off Sirigu's outstretched boot, then Rocchi drew the entire Palermo defence away from Foggia whose piledriver on the run was well tipped over the angle. Mauri couldn't finish off the last of a volley of chances by Rocchi which was parried his way by Sirigu, and Modibo Diakité headed just wide from a corner kick. Baronio held Zárate in a headlock before the 1-1 restart to reassure him that he'll be back scoring plenty of goals sooner rather than later. Maurito has not had much luck in recent weeks and was in some danger of losing the self-belief which drives his game. A great performance and a hard-earned point means Davide Ballardini can rest easy ahead of Sofia. A second Sandri mural has appeared in the Curva with a good 20 rows behind it sealed off by teenage scarfers, as his beatification rolls on.

Three defeats and a draw in four now for Lazio who are on the edge of Olimpico meltdown. Parma have started well, but to be comprehensively outplayed for almost an hour, fortunate not to concede half a dozen goals to newly promoted underdogs and fail to create a clear opening is unacceptable. The Curva Nord kept quiet during the first half to support the National Ultras movement which opposes 'Tessera del Tifoso' (state issued ID required for entry to watch football in Italy). The hardline fascists employed in the Ministry of the Interior responsible for concocting such a dangerous scheme need to learn the art of moderation, if their Orwellian grey matter can take the strain. Alex Kolarov's lunging tackle from behind was too strong, too deep in his own area and although he took the ball, there was still enough boot for Bojinov to play with and his squirming collapse won the penalty, reducing Lazio to ten for the second half. Nicola Amoruso slid the ball beyond Muslera, justice after Il Jardinero had cheated Parma with his scandalous appeal a few minutes earlier. The Gialloblu opened the scoring early and if the idea of Levski Sofia away was not already worrying Lazio, it will be now; Valeri Bojinov waited for Zenoni's cross to drop and the former City man powered a volley over Muslera, when Baronio was hurt and calling for assistance further upfield. Although Parma failed to take a glut of chances after the break to really humiliate Lazio - who were dire - his unfair goal set the tone for a game reduced to nought by a succession of baffling decisions. Lazio are on a hiding to nothing come Sunday afternoon and it won't end there, the away day from Hell is just around the corner. Another defeat or two will be the end of Ballardini in Rome. The only good news to report was first sight of the excellent new Lazio program, 'Curva Nord Lazio'.

Without laying blame squarely on Emilson Cribari and Albano Bizzarri, which is not easy, Lazio's new European dream is now looking distinctly foggy having not taken advantage of the many decent chances that winged their way within minutes of Foggia joining the fray. Cross shots whizzed by Gustafsson from Pasqualino's pace and passing skills as if the Lazio strikers were targeting the far post. Zárate and Cruz have their own cases to answer. Stefan Lichtsteiner's abortion of a clearance at the weekend which presented David Trezeguet with Juve's 94th. minute second, was carbon copied by Cribari here in the 93rd. He could not fathom how best to clear a harmless cross which fell straight to him. Hoof it up into row Z or control and clear. Neither. Reacting slowly, Crib headed the bouncing ball down into the ground, teeing up Marc Janko who scored with ease. The adverb 'slowly' does not recreate the scene, Emilson had time to run around the track, shoot a few basketballs and then clear the cross. Bizzarri had earlier gifted the Austrian's a barely deserved equalizer by colliding with Diakité from another innocuous ball into the box. Foggia swept home from 25 metres and his introduction was truly inspirational, but until defensive frailties are addressed, Lazio will remain vulnerable however well Muslera et al are playing. To win all your home games when competing in Europe is sacrosanct, and it's uphill all the way from here. Trips to Sofia, Villareal and Salzburg await and after seeing Lazio crumble in Borĺs, points will be inordinately tough to come by. Unless Mauro Zárate remembers how to play for his team instead of trying to negotiate Serie A defences on his own, he won't start scoring again wherever Ballardini plays him. Just one goal against IF Elsborg to his name this season. Perhaps the only solution is to play ten at the back in recupero. Parma to score in the 92nd. minute anyone?

AS Roma News No Totti really does mean No Party. Sidelined by his recurring knee injury since Giornata 7 when he scored twice against Napoli, and a hat-trick on his return today, Totti now has 18 goals in the can this season in all competitions which blows away the likes of, well, every other striker in Serie A. Plucky Bari tested Roma towards the end, Andreolli put through his own net and Almiron crashed a fierce shot against the bar. Julio Sergio was in fine fettle and 11,000 visiting fans celebrated a feisty, albeit losing performance in the top flight. Next up Atalanta in Bergamo whose impregnable home defence as it was under Luigi Del Neri's tactics last term, has been showing signs of creakage this time around. Twelve points between now and the Winter Break is a realistic target now Totti is back, and should put Roma in the top four by Christmas. For now, Ranieri's 4-4-2 with Vucinic wide behind Totti and Menez lifts Roma to 11th., just three points behind UEFA CL contenders Fiorentina.
We are a fortnight away from this year's AS Roma Derby. If you want to order tickets from us, we ask that you organize it sooner rather than later. Prices are likely to increase as the match draws closer and availability decreases. |

SS Lazio News Lazio had just the better of an intriguing first half without creating much to get excited about, and Napoli more or less the same in the second. Julio Cruz attempted to bite a chunk out of Rinaudo's wrist and the Biancocelesti amassed five yellow cards, which will hamper their chances of derby success. Whatever drives Ballardini's training camps, discipline is clearly not a factor. One point earned grants Balla a seven day stay of execution, but no more. Bologna come here on Sunday and the result will be decisive in a managerial sense at least. Stendardo played at last in a 3-4-2-1 formation which is why Lazio move up to 15th. Delio Rossi is the new manager of Palermo and we wish him all the best. |

Information about transfers at Roma and Lazio is important in so far as how this site is managed. Our customers want to know who it is they are watching and where they played their football before arriving in or returning to Rome. Stars or substitutes, they're all here in our Calcio Mercato and you can check out how they perform on the pitch in our Live Match Reports. We don't just highlight the big names, everyone knows about Totti and De Rossi, but what about the Primavera at Roma and Lazio? Rome's top youth academy players are some of the best in Europe, and they'll be lighting up the Stadio Olimpico in the next few years if the path to Premiership cash taken by Kiko Macheda and Davide Petrucci is dealt with by the FIGC. |

ROMA / Back from a second successful loan season at FC Nantes, Ricardo Faty (top row, #1), dubbed 'the new Viera' is back in Rome for good this time and playing first team football. Defensive midfielder Alessandro Malomo (18), playmaker Andrea Bertolacci and keeper Valerio Frasca are almost ready to be loaned out before being thrown in at the deep end. Frasca's chance will come sooner however, AS Roma's keeping woes aren't improving. Much has been made of Roma youth team players being released only for them to go on and establish themselves not just at other clubs, but with the Azzurri too. Marco Amelia (Frascati) of Genoa and Daniele Galloppa (Tor dé Cenci) of Parma have flourished since leaving Trigoria, and the flogging of Alberto Aquilani (Monte Sacro) to Liverpool by Rosella Sensi will never be forgiven. Top youth stars Marco D'Alessandro and Alessandro Crescenzi are both at Grosseto in Serie B this season, to hone their skills for the Giallorossi cause. |

|
LAZIO / Midfield talent Manuel Ricci (19) from Anzio, born and bred Romans Luca Andrea Crescenzi (updating photo) and outstanding all-round sportsman Lorenzo Cinque (bottom row, #3) who rejected approaches from Chelsea and Barcelona last season, striking sensation Jacopo Sciamanna (bottom row, #4) from Viterbo and top rated defender Marco Davide Faraoni could all break into the Prima Squadra this term after excelling for Lazio's Primavera. Marco broke his leg at the end of September and will be out of action for six months. |

Five of Lazio's Prima Squadra whose photos appear to the right of here are 'dissidenti' - Google 'Lazio dissidents' and read about why Goran Pandev, Ledesma, Manfredini, Berni and to a lesser extent Stendardo are unlikely to figure for the Biancocelesti until after the January transfer window, and only then if Lotito fails again to sell them for as much money as he thinks they are worth (market value plus c. €3 million). |
