Match programs (when available) are free but nothing to write home about. Italians make alot of noise when they watch football and the overwhelming din generates real atmosphere.
Football in Rome is as passionate as it is political. The blue half of the city is traditionally 'right wing'. Paolo Di Canio's salute during the January 2005 Rome derby was in no way an isolated incident, Lazio fans stand as one and do exactly the same to cheer each player when their team is announced ahead of every home game. This kind of behaviour infuriates most Roma fans, but a small minority make it their business to organize displays of extreme right wing imagery in the Curva Sud, bettering the very worst of the relatively new 'Irriducibili' fascist group, who do absolutely nothing to improve the Curva Nord's reputation as a safe haven for confused extremists in dire need of a cause. Roma and Lazio Ultras consider it 'hip' to be hooligan and the English disease has caught on big time, but their waving of pro-IRA flags alongside others bearing the cross of St. George is misguided at best.
Your ticket will be scanned and you'll be frisked by security at the gate if you're carrying a bag, but this is standard procedure.     At the end of an exciting season which saw Roma narrowly miss out on Champions League football (again) and Lazio land 6th. place, everything was about to change. In the wake of a brilliant winning World Cup campaign by Italia in Germany and triumphant scenes in Rome led by De Rossi, Totti, Perrotta, Peruzzi and Oddo, the Calciopoli trial loomed large. Juventus were punished heavily for cheating and a number of other clubs penalised for lesser counts of complicity in the match fixing web that rocked Italian football.
The initial July 15th. verdict decreed that Lazio be demoted to Serie B with a 7 point deduction, but appeals were made and by July 25th. they were back in Serie A with an 11 point deficit, a two match home ban, €100,000 fine and 30 points docked from last season, ergo 6th. became 16th. and UEFA Cup football forfeited. Their 11 point penalty in Serie A was eventually reduced to just 3. Pre-Calciopoli, Roma too were bound for the UEFA Cup but activities behind the scenes at Juventus and Fiorentina landed them in the Champions League. At last!

Following a poor start, Roma improved dramatically after Christmas and put together a record 11 consecutive Serie A victories. It was perhaps inevitable that Marco 'Matrix' Materazzi would head a last minute equalizer for Inter at the Olimpico to deny the Giallorossi 12 but an identikit Materazzi header equalized Zidane's penalty in the World Cup final so Roma's loss may be considered Italy's gain. Middlesbrough ended a good UEFA Cup run with some wanton escapology in the Last 16/Second Leg.
A repeat of last year's Coppa Italia Final went the way of Inter again who were fortunate to overcome Lazio in an earlier round. The Biancocelesti completed a solid domestic campaign on the back of an enviable home record, marred only by a 0-2 derby reverse in February but they will start this season without Paolo Di Canio, who fell out with Claudio Lotito and joined Cisco Roma on the rebound. Messina survived, Juventus, Lecce and Treviso were relegated and new boys Atalanta, Torino and Catania join the elite.

This was a great game, real showpiece attacking from both Roma and Messina from the off on the final day of the season. Messina will play in Serie B next year after finishing bottom but have every chance of an immediate return to the top flight if they can keep Christian Riganò. Aquilani did not do enough to cut out D'Aversa's through ball to the burly number 9 who brushed Chivu aside, skipped over Curci who went down too early and rolled the ball home before falling over. Less than a minute later Taddei fed a sharp return pass into the area and Totti left 3 defenders far behind to fire low into the opposite corner. Il Capitano lifted a bouncing centre from Panucci onto the bar and Mancini made it 2-1 with a moment of brilliant audacity, he raced past Zanchi and Calà to bend the ball over Cesaretti and into the net from 18 yards. Another chance went begging as Totti ran through and smashed an angled drive past the post. Roma man Edgar Álvarez who is on loan at Messina began to cause problems in the second half with some very quick running indeed from right midfield, which lifted the spirit of his team. Riganò, airborne, equalized at the far post by just about getting on the end of a terrific cross by Manolo Pestrin which arced over the entire Roma defence and almost himself. He knocked the ball in at full stretch with Curci floundering on the line. Riganò pulled Totti down by his shirt as a free kick flew by but no-one expected him to score from the spot, least of all debutante Cesaretti who saved with considerable ease by falling on the ball. Substitute Christian Wilhelmsson controlled a deep cross in the area and squared for his captain to go all Capocannoniere from a central position after Perrotta had cleared the way with a shrewd dummy. Cordova rifled a 35 yard free kick inside the near post for 3-3 only for Aleandro Rosi to win it by heading in a mistimed, misdirected bicycle kick from Philippe Mexes following a deep corner. The substitute ran towards the Curva Sud in celebration but fell flat on his behind before he got there after tripping over one of the advertising boards. The Coppa Italia was brought out at the whistle along with all the kids of all the players for a real Roma love in and that was that.

Parma are still hanging in there on the back of on loan goal machine Giuseppe Rossi who has posed real danger to Serie A defences since arriving from Manchester just a few months ago. While not favourites to join Ascoli and Messina in B, they'll be scrapping to retain A status with Reggina, Catania, Siena and Chievo in 7 days. However, by avoiding defeat this afternoon they have a better than even chance of top flight football next season win or lose on Sunday when they entertain Empoli at the Stadio Tardini. Lazio qualified for the Champions League last week so the objective today to secure 3rd. place ahead of Milan and give Angelo Peruzzi a good send off. Ticket prices were reduced so the Tribuna Tevere was packed to the rafters in 85 degrees heat. A patched up back four of Cribari, Stendardo, De Silvestri and Bonetto was strung together in front of Tommaso Berni who was selected ahead of Ballotta. Rossi is bang on form but credit to the Lazio defence for restricting him to digs from distance on his weaker right foot. Ledesma lobbed a poor clearance back in to Rocchi who volleyed towards the corner from an acute angle, Bucci palming the ball away. A collision between Bonetto and Ledesma allowed Dessena to bungle an effort through to Igor Budan, leaving Stendardo and De Silvestri stranded but the Croatian ballooned the ball very high and even wider from 10 yards with only rookie keeper Berni to beat. A terrible miss given that Parma are flirting with Serie B ignominy. Rocchi extracted an identikit save with 3 defenders in close attendance then combined with Pandev to set up De Silvestri who volleyed a loose clearing header by Castellini straight at Bucci. The solitary second half highlight came early, Rossi busied himself in the D and moved the ball on to his left foot to rattle a fierce shot that clattered back off the angle with interest. New boy Berni was replaced by the great Angelo Peruzzi with 5 minutes remaining and he pulled off his shirt to reveal '651 volte lazio'. At full time some kind of party unfolded in front of the Curva Nord to celebrate what has been a successful domestic campaign for the Biancocelesti.

PARMA: Bucci, Coly, Paci, Couto, Castellini, Dessena, Grella, Parravicini (subbed: Cigarini 74), Muslimovic, Budan (subbed: Gasbarroni 46), Rossi (subbed: Bocchetti 88)

Berni (subbed: Peruzzi 85), Cribari, Stendardo, De Silvestri, Bonetto, Firmani, Ledesma (subbed: Baronio 70), Manfredini, Jimenez, Pandev (subbed: Inzaghi 65), Rocchi

Historical far left and far right leanings of both clubs are not as prevalent today as the media likes to portray. A fascist contingent now has it's place amongst the Livorno fans and they are supportive of some right wing political groups in Italy. A far greater number of Lazio fans place great distance between themselves and the same kind of extremism, irrespective of what the Irriducibili in their wisdom choose to display in the Curva Nord. Rocchi and Pandev have stopped scoring, and for this reason alone Lazio have given Milan the opportunity to take and hold on to 3rd. place with Palermo looking again at 4th. but results elsewhere, Roma winning 2-1 in Sicily and Milan held 0-0 by the Viola at home will have pleased Delio Rossi. Lazio have been playing well, Luis Jimenez a live wire behind the 2 strikers, Christian Manfredini controlling the midfield in a 4-3-1-2 formation and the defensive line, whoever has been selected, outstanding. Goal machine Lucarelli was the highlight in red and black and there were more than a few skeletons in Lazio's Livornese cupboard. Recent departee Antonio Filippini started, as did Stefano Fiore who was mysteriously cheered off by the Lazio support, Cesar Aparecido who spent 5 seasons in Rome replaced compatriot Paulinho and Alessandro Grandoni, replaced by Balleri, last wore the Biancocelesti shirt ten years ago. Typical Roman weather for this time of year preceded kick off as heavy rain in warm conditions lashed the Olimpico. Manitta parried a dipping Zauri volley to Jimenez who was caught offside and the trend continued as the second string Granata goalie parried a Manfredini strike to the Chilean who headed in but was flagged off by less than a yard, taking a kick in the face by Pasquale for his efforts. He found the back of the net soon after when Pandev ran at the Livorno defence and touched the ball on for his scuffed strike that crept in off the post when everyone else expected a return pass. A fortuitous but nonetheless deserved goal. Manfredini and Pandev wafted wide, only Rocchi's dart into the box onto Pandev's assist stretched the visiting defence but his shot across Manitta was off target. Manfredini headed well over from a Behrami centre in the second 45 and substitute Stephen Makinwa sent a low drive wide of the post. Livorno didn't exactly roll over but Lazio were never in trouble. Paulinho and Lucarelli flattered to deceive while Pasquale scrapped and fouled his way through 93 minutes without being sent off at least twice. Lazio were in celebratory mood as recupero timed out and they headed over to the Curva Nord. Sebastiano Siviglia urged his team mates to walk towards and applaud those of us in the Distinti Est, after which he threw his shirt into the lower tiers and took a bow. Simple gesture, much appreciated.

Lazio are struggling to keep Milan at arm's length and with just 2 points taken from their last 2 games, nothing less than 3 against the Viola would do. Liverani was the biggest summer sale last year and this was his own personal return to Lazio and the Olimpico, he served 76 minutes for the Florentine cause and was abused by the Curva Nord for most of that time. Former Empoli men Bonetto and Rocchi gave a good account of themselves early on, Rocchi pushing Manfredini's excellent cross in from the right a tad wide of Sebastien Frey who was about to come under a sustained assault. Rocchi collided with a Makinwa centre and put together a shot at the second attempt which was just about gathered by Frey. Only Luca Toni's bicycle kick to Martin Jorgensen who lashed a half volley over ever worried Lazio, they spent prolonged spells on the offensive in the first 45. Rocchi powered past 2 defenders and leathered an angled drive off the upright then combined well with Bonetto to set up Cristian Ledesma for a rising 25 yard drive that Frey parried to safety with considered exaggeration. Riccardo Bonetto made space down the left flank for Rocchi to blast a dipping drive at Frey and then fired in a similar effort himself from 20 yards that was tipped over the angle. Martin Jorgenson had bamboozled Belleri moments earlier to send a fearsome drive marginally wide of Peruzzi and post. 0-0 at the break was harsh on Lazio. A dangerous first time cross by Pasqual saw substitute Pazzini head well wide of the post when unmarked and Jorgenson was looking dangerous, trying to work space with Mutu wherever possible. The veteran Danish star eventually found an acre within which to clip the ball over Peruzzi and onto Mutu's head for 1-0, Siviglia making a valiant effort to clear on the line with the rest of the Lazio defence nowhere to be found. Pandev ran across the Viola box and set up De Silvestri to crash home the equalizer but Frey pulled off a great save yet again and so sealed the 3 points. Tare fed Rocchi for a tame shot and Lazio were attacking freely at the end, but time ran out and a 3rd. home league defeat this term food for thought before next week's token derby.

FIORENTINA: Frey, Pasqual, Dainelli, Gamberini, Potenza, Pazienza, Liverani (subbed: Blasi 76), Montolivo, Jorgensen, Mutu (subbed: Reginaldo 80), Toni (subbed: Pazzini 63)

This was a horrible nightmare for Lazio. Valon Behrami was dismissed for hacking down Semioli and then headbutting Paolo Sammarco for good measure. Luciano Zauri followed suit in recupero for a second bookable offence and for what seemed an age in between, we had to endure long spells of serial timewasting by Chievo interspersed with the most painful kind of wasteful football by Lazio all the way to the final whistle. Ironically, the Flying Donkeys spent an inordinate amount of time rolling around on terra firma for absolutely no reason whatsoever at every given opportunity. They arrived from Verona to secure a point, and they succeeded by playing an 8 strong defensive wall + Erjon Bogdani for the entire second 45. Exciting team, Chievo. If Lazio dare play as woefully as this against Fiorentina on Sunday they'll be brushed aside by the likes of Mutu, Toni and former friend Fabio Liverani. But it all started so well for the Biancocelesti in brilliant sunshine, last week's 2-2 draw at Ascoli forgotten as they forced Chievo back from the off with Champions League qualification firmly in mind. By the 15 minute mark Luis Jimenez had blazed over from 6 yards, Mudingayi reacted slowly to a similar chance and a free kick by the Chilean kept out by Squizzi fell a few yards short of Pandev who was everywhere without ever coming close to scoring, bar an effort off the post. The Macedonian hitman struck the woodwork after latching on to a Rocchi pass and squeezing through 2 defenders. An atrocious second half came and went via a handful of poor shots and wayward headers, capped by Zauri's dismissal. Chievo are in the midst of a relegation dogfight so their resolve and that of Del Neri who bossed Roma for 6 months in 2004 was to be expected. 2 seasons hence they ground out a 0-0 draw here against the Giallorossi to secure Serie A status, however, another home draw for Lazio will send their aspirations of Champions League football tumbling into the UEFA Cup of mediocrity.

CHIEVO: Squizzi, Malagò, Mandelli, Mantovani, Marchese (subbed: Rickler 84), Luciano, Sammarco, Italiano, Semioli (subbed: Bogdani 59), Obinna (subbed: Troiano 46), Pellissier

Lazio cantered to their 8th. win on the bounce despite a dogged effort by Messina, who almost snatched an equalizer in the final moments when Riganò sent a simple chance wide with Peruzzi rooted. Former Roma men Vincent Candela and Edgar Álvarez played some part today, the Honduran subbing Bakayoko on 54 minutes after Candela was ordered off the field of play for hauling down Behrami and then trying to stamp on his head. Cristian Ledesma was suspended and his replacement Roberto Baronio fired a free kick which was tipped out of the top right hand corner of the net by Paoletti on 4 minutes. Mauri controlled a Zauri centre and volleyed a fraction wide of the post then sent a big header wide from a deep cross by Valon Behrami. Manfredini tried to repeat his spectacular strike against Empoli a few weeks ago, weaving his way into a shooting position and smashing a drive at Paoletti who did very well to parry the ball over the bar. Rocchi took on Zauri's pass and turned 2 defenders inside out before sliding across to Pandev whose shot fizzed past keeper and post. Guglielmo Stendardo flicked a header home from another Zauri centre and 1-0 was the very least Lazio deserved at the break. Mudingayi played an untidy 1-2 with Rocchi through diving last ditch tackles and desperate defending, culminating in Paoletti grabbing the ball and Mudingayi's ankles in the same moment so the penalty appeal was waved away. Both Mauri and Zauri set up shooting chances for Rocchi from 20 yards, Mauri eventually finding the back of the net himself but his angled volley was disallowed for handball. De Vezze found Riganò in plenty of space 8 yards from goal but his half volley flew over Peruzzi and across the 6 yard box to safety in the last minute of recupero. Lazio have won their last 8 Serie A matches and at this rate, this time next month, will have qualified for the Champions League 2007-2008 with Inter, Roma and Milan.

Gangs of Roma Ultras with knives target lone or small groups of away supporters on European nights, this is no news. They are cowards and all things being equal will be on the receiving end of payback meted out by United lads in Manchester next Tuesday. Warnings issued by MUFC were correct and minor injuries sustained by a handful of Reds who made their own way to the match, although we travelled from Piazza Flaminio to Piazza Mancini and wandered through hundreds of Romanisti to reach the Distinti Ospiti. No-one flinched. Drunk United fans outside a pub on Via Nazionale punched and kicked a service bus I was travelling on earlier in the day and stories began to circulate that Mancs were being herded unceremoniously onto coaches in the Villa Borghese a few hours before the game, but there was no serious disorder in Rome before kick off. The usual suspects at the bottom right corner of the Curva Nord presented their sorry selves again tonight and they goaded United fans for long periods, waiting for uniformed thugs to step in on their behalf as soon as we made any kind of response, which is exactly what happened. Plastic bottles, coins and lighters flew when Paul Scholes was dismissed for looking at Totti and in the couple of minutes before half time when Rodrigo Taddei scored, Roma fans surged towards the perspex barrier. We did the same and all hell broke lose. Batons were smashed on heads, fans stamped on, punched and attacked by the Polizia. It is normal here for these morons to stand around in full riot gear watching their compatriots do as they please. The combination of Roma fans being completely free to antagonize away supporters in the Distinti Ospiti and the fact that English fans are a target in Europe at football games led to scenes of uncontained violence. A 60 minute wait in buses surrounded by those responsible for random acts of violence a few hours earlier followed a 109 minute wait in the Olimpico during which time we tried to enjoy the 1999 Champions League Final all over again - big screen entertainment provided by MUFC. It was 00:21 when we were allowed out and nigh on 02:00 by the time most of us were dumped at Termini. Roma won it 2-1 and United were fortunate not to concede more. For the record, here is a summary of the goals but tonight was all about State sanctioned violence. Roma went 1-0 up via a deflected Taddei strike that bobbled in after good work by Mancini in the box. Rooney steadied himself to shoot home after Solskjaer's cross gave him time to pick his spot and Mirko Vucinic finished off a Mancini piledriver that bounced his way off a stunned Van Der Sar. Roma played at full tilt but Rooney's goal will make life difficult for them at OT.
